sansevieria
These succulent natives to tropical West Africa are very easy to grow, and a common first plant for novice plant owners. Thanks to modern genetic testing.
Light: Sansevieria prefer medium light, but can do well in both higher and lower light conditions. Darker-pigmented varieties are better suited for low light.
Water: Sansevieria are extremely drought tolerant. Water every 3-4 weeks during the growing season, and once every two months during the winter.
Humidity: Normal room humidity is fine. Do not keep anywhere where the temperature drops below 50 degrees.
Soil: Sansevieria need very well-draining soil. Any cactus or succulent soil would be a good choice.
Nutrients: Feed every six weeks during the growing season with a mild cactus fertilizer or a diluted houseplant fertilizer. Do not fertilize during the winter.
Pests/Diseases: Check regularly for mealy bugs, spider mites, scale, and thrips. Overwatering your Sansevieria can cause diseases such as root rot, leaf spot, botrytis, and southern blight.
Toxicity: Sansevieria are moderately toxic to humans and animals.
