monstera

Native to tropical Central America, monsteras are an evergreen aroid commonly found in households around the world. Most well-known for its leaf-splits and holes, called fenestrations, Monsteras are often referred to as “Swiss Cheese Plants.” Fenestrations are a Monstera’s natural way of letting light through to lower leaves.

Light: Monsteras prefer medium to bright, indirect light.

Water: Moderate. Allow the top half of the soil to dry out before giving a thorough watering. Brighter conditions require more frequent watering, where dimmer conditions necessitate less watering.

Humidity: Normal room humidity is fine, but added humidity will help a monstera thrive indoors.

Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix amended with additional perlite or bark to assist with aeration.

Nutrients: Feed monthly or bimonthly with diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer during the growing season. Do not feed during the winter when growth slows.

Pests/Diseases: Monsteras are easily affected by pests such as spider mites and thrips, as well as fungal issues like root rot and leaf spot. Check your plant for pests or infection when watering.

Toxicity: Monsteras are toxic to humans and animals if the foliage is consumed.

Note: Monsteras are climbers in nature, so giving your monsteras a trellis or moss pole to

climb will help it reach maturity.
